Types of ear plastic surgery Considerations for ear plastic surgery

Otoplasty is a micro plastic surgery project specially prepared for those with ugly ears. So what are the types of ear plastic surgery and what are the precautions for ear plastic surgery? Let's take a look below.

Types of Ear Surgery

1. Acquired ear, also known as marsupial ear, is a relatively rare congenital ear deformity. In particular, except for the earlobe, the skin in front of the ear is connected to the skin on the side of the skull, and the cartilage structure of the auricle is basically normal.

2. Cup-shaped ears, also called curled ears or drooping ears, are relatively common congenital ear deformities, often present on both sides. The rim of the helix is tightened, and the helix and auricle cartilage are curled and adhered. The scaphoid and triangular auricle are very narrow. More seriously, the entire upper part of the auricle can be reduced and drooped, the helix shape disappears, and the entire auricle is a scaphoid ear.

3. Cauliflower ear: It is caused by the infection and destruction of the cartilage after the auricle is burned or injured, which causes the cartilage to contract, thicken, deform, and curl up. The shape of the auricle is irregular, which is also called cauliflower ear. If there is residual skin in the repair of cauliflower ear, it can be cut from the edge of the helix in front of the ear and implanted with cartilage.

4. Protruding ears: It is the most common congenital ear deformity, which occurs on both sides. Its characteristics are relatively large auricle and flat upper part. The helix is not fully developed and its shape is lost. In addition, the concha is overdeveloped, and the angle between the scaphoid and the concha is greater than 150 degrees.

Things to note when undergoing ear surgery

1. Precautions before surgery

Patients with ear deformities can be treated through ear plastic surgery. Before undergoing ear plastic surgery, the patient must undergo a physical examination. People with heart disease or scar constitution are not suitable for ear plastic surgery.

2. Postoperative precautions

1. Antibiotics are routinely used for 3-5 days after the operation. The sutures of the reconstructed ear and the area behind the ear are removed on the 12th day. Bandaging is still required for several days after the sutures are removed.

2. When bandaging, pay attention to packing the groove behind the ear with gauze. All dressings can be removed three weeks after the operation. Carefully remove the hair at the edge of the helix. Avoid excessive pressure on the reconstructed ear within six months.

3. The stitches should be removed 12 days after the operation and the patient should not be subjected to external force in the short term after the operation.

What is ear reconstruction surgery?

The expander two-stage total ear reconstruction surgery mainly uses a skin expander to slowly expand the hairless skin in the mastoid area, and then takes the patient's own rib cartilage to carve an ear frame to complete the ear reconstruction surgery. It has the advantages of sufficient amount of reconstructed ear skin, natural skin color and texture, clear contours, and strong three-dimensional effect. It is currently the preferred total ear reconstruction method internationally.

What are the key points of postoperative care?

1. One week after the operation, you may feel some swelling or pain. These are normal reactions. But you can resume your normal work.

2. However, you must wear the bandage for the first month and the stitches can only be removed after 10 to 12 days.

3. You must wear ear protection when sleeping to avoid improper posture during sleep that may affect ear recovery, until 4-6 weeks.

4. It is best not to participate in overly intense sports activities within 6-8 weeks to avoid unnecessary worry and fear.
