Gucci History

At the beginning of the last century, Italian Guccio Gucci lived in London and Paris. He gradually became familiar with the clothing tastes of local fashionistas. After returning to Florence in 1921, he opened a store specializing in high-end luggage accessories and equestrian supplies, selling exquisite leather goods made by the best local craftsmen and stamping them with the GUCCI logo. In just a few years, the store attracted a group of well-connected customers from home and abroad. This huge success prompted Guccio Gucci to open his first branch in Rome in 1938.

After World War II, due to the shortage of raw materials, Gucci designed a bag with bamboo handles instead of leather handles in 1947. This design is still a classic. In the 1950s, the red, green and red stripes derived from horse girths were used by Gucci as a decorative pattern for accessories, becoming another iconic design of the brand.

In 1953, Gucci's brand reputation was at its peak. In that year, Guccio Gucci passed away, and the company's New York branch opened in the same year, marking the beginning of Gucci's attack on the global market. In the 1960s, with the establishment of Gucci branches in London, Paris and Palm Beach, Florida, this Italian brand representing fashion and taste gained a firm foothold in the world's most important markets. By the end of the 1960s, "GG" officially became Gucci's brand logo.

In 1970, Gucci's global expansion was directed to the Far East, with stores in Hong Kong and Tokyo. In the early 1980s, Gucci's leadership was in the hands of Maurizio Gucci, but at this time, internal disputes within the Gucci family affected the company's development, and Gucci's brand image began to decline. In 1990, American Tom Ford joined Gucci as the company's women's creative director. His arrival heralded the beginning of Gucci's revolutionary transformation.

In 1994, Tom Ford was appointed as the creative director of all products of Gucci Group. In March of the following year, he launched the satin shirts, mohair tops and velvet trousers that made him famous, creating a new image that is modern, sexy and cool. Tom Ford made drastic changes to Gucci, turning this traditional brand into a new modern spokesperson and making Gucci a fashion representative for young people. In the trend of transformation of European and American luxury brands in the 1990s, Gucci was undoubtedly the most successful in redefining its position in the fashion industry.

Since 1994, Gucci has been the world's most influential heavyweight fashion brand. At the same time, it has gradually attracted high-quality brands in the global fashion industry, and a number of classic brands such as France's Yves Saint Laurent have become members of the Gucci Group. In 1997, Gucci bought the famous Swiss watch factory Severin Montres, with which it had cooperated for 23 years, and thus completely controlled its watch business. In 1998, Gucci was named "European Enterprise of the Year" by the European Business News Union for its good strategic vision, business management and financial operations. In 1999, Gucci formed a strategic alliance with the retailer Printemps Paris, transforming itself from a single brand to a multi-brand super fashion kingdom, and then becoming the largest fashion group in Italy. Today, Gucci has branches all over the world, covering a variety of products such as clothing, leather goods, accessories and perfumes, and is deeply sought after by fashion people around the world.
